On the Steam version, the objective and mission tabs on the PDA screen are both blank, while attempting to open the PDA on the standalone version temporarily locks up the game (opening and closing the Escape menu fixes this, but I'm unable to open the PDA). Briefings for mods don't work, either (I tested with Assassinate Darth Vader). I do not have this problem when running the game in DOSBox. |

Hi means the Standlone Version the CD or Gog Version ?
The Problem can also with the old GTX470 Driver latest is from 2018 !

OK , to verfify If the old Nvidia Drivers are the Problem cause , try it with your Igpu from your CPU , Update the Intel Drivers May before ! Hmm Mod : Assassinate Darth Vader ! In your Log i see , You load Secbase (Vannila Map) ? Hmm or TFE cant Log the right Names for Custom Missions , and means at First that is Secbase ? The log is from when I tried to load the main game (both Steam and CD version; the log was the same). I don't know what version of the mod I have, because I downloaded it a long time ago. It has all the VADCUT#.GMD files, though, so classic, I guess?
Also, to be clear, the main game itself plays fine (I already tried the first two missions of the main game), as well as the cutscenes. It just won't load the briefings, which is a problem, since that's where the difficulty is selected.
I tried temporarily disabling my video driver (TFE just crashes trying to launch) and updating my driver (didn't make a difference).

Okay, I just tried killvader_modern.zip, and the briefing is loading for that mission. Not sure what's different.

Guys - I spent a month converting those 50 missions to a modern TFE-supported format. Many classic ones will not work because the batch files do a lot of asset renaming of which TFE is not familiar with (since it skips batch files). All the modern versions should work. Okay, thanks for the information. I guess that answers my question with mods, but I still don't understand why the briefings for the main game won't work. I tried verifying the game cache for the Steam version, but that didn't fix anything.
I did notice that the CD version was missing a file called DFBRIEF.LFD. When I copied that over from the Steam version, I could finally open the PDA, but the mission briefings and objectives still won't load.
Are there modern files I need for the main campaign briefings to load properly in TFE?

@carmage ah i have the Error Found now , that is because the Classic version have a wrong name killvader.lfd must be rename in dfbrief.lfd , look in the Modern zip . there it is right ! With Total Commander , you can rename Files inside a zip/rar etc. , without Decompress/Recompress !
But in the Bat file you see it also for killvader.lfd , that was even all for the Dos Version !

Okay, copying the LFD was a bad idea, because it was causing Dark Forces to crash through DOSBox (Landru error: Pointer invalid). Deleting the copy of DFBRIEF.LFD allowed me to see the main game briefings through DOSBox again, but not through TFE. This leaves me confused. Are the briefings for the main game baked into the executable or the GOB file, and TFE is just unable to read them?

@carmage Only do this for TFE , the Dos Part rename that via. the Batch file. Dos/TFE needs a dfbrief.lfd as default for the Briefings or Custom Briefings !
But use Modern , there is all fixed , may remember just this for another Custom Maps for the right Filenames !

Okay, this can be closed as a non-issue. I found the problem.
The CD version was missing the file, DFBRIEF.DFE, inside the LFD folder, which already had its own DFBRIEF.LFD. The reason why the Steam version wasn't working was probably due to the fact there were two DFBRIEF.LFD files: one in the LFD folder, and a larger one in the base folder. Because they're not plain text, I was unable to tell which one was the real one.

@carmage Never heard or seen the DFBRIEF.DFE ! ?
And with this runs all without problems , Custom Mods/Maps needs even the dfbrief.lfd instead of ex. killvader.lfd i have only this Files ! (German Version) ignore : stormfin.WAX , TEXT.MSG , CUTSCENE.LST and GEARUP.LFD so far
The Custom Cutscenes won't work for now in TFE , just Default Dark Forces Cutscenes !
hmm it seems a CUTSCENE.LST will not load from a zip or unpacked in Mods !
Tempoarary Fix : Unpack the VADCUT.LST and rename in CUTSCENE.LST and place in the Dark Forces Folder , where are the Gob Files Located !
The Modern Version , contains not the Music Files (.gmd) !
Update : ok the Cutscenes won't work for me from the Modern Map , because i had a CUTSCENE.LST in the Dark Forces Folder , Mod/Map load have less Priority , The Dark Forces Folder have a higher for all Files !
New Fix for GearUP Cutscene , and whch fix the Cutscenes.lst conflict ex. for Assassinate Darth Vader (Modern)

I have not seen this issue in the base game or with mods, so I'm closing for now. If anyone sees this issue with the latest version and can reproduce it, the issue can be re-opened.
